Austria enforces specific regulations for both standard bicycles and e-bikes to ensure road safety. Here's a breakdown of the requirements:
Standard Bicycle Compliance:
Braking System:
Bicycles must be equipped with two independent and effective braking systems capable of promptly stopping the bicycle.
Lighting and Reflectors:
When riding at night or in conditions of poor visibility, bicycles must have:
A white or yellow front light (steady or flashing).
A red rear light (steady or flashing).
A red rear reflector.
Reflectors on the pedals, or on the wheel spokes.
Audible Warning Device:
Bicycles must be equipped with a working bell or other audible warning device.
General Condition:
The bicycle must be in a safe and roadworthy condition.
E-Bike/Pedelec Compliance:
Primary Propulsion:
The e-bike must be designed to be propelled primarily by the rider; motor assistance is only provided when pedaling.
Maximum Power:
The maximum continuous rated power of the motor cannot exceed 250 watts.
Speed Limitation:
The power output must progressively reduce as the speed increases.
The motor assistance must be cut off when the e-bike reaches a speed of 25 km/h.
The motor assistance must also stop when the rider stops pedaling.
Classification:
E-bikes (with the above limitations) are treated like regular bicycles in Austria.
Lighting and Audible warning device:
E-bikes must abide by the same rules that apply to standard bicycles.
Remember, ebikes sold in Austria must adhere to relevant EU standards, including those with the CE marking. For more information and rules for ebikes and bicycles, click here.
